My top five travel destinations

I’ve always believed that one of the greatest gifts I’ve been given in life is the fact my work allows me to travel. Being able to travel across the globe is an indescribable blessing. It teaches my children (and ultimately me) about the wonders of the world. My children and I get to explore different foods and cultures. For the past twelve years I have been lucky enough to travel every summer to the most amazing destinations. In this list, you’ll find my top five travel destinations that are child friendly but can also be fun without your kids.

  1. Costa Rica: Adventure and Nature for Everyone

Costa Rica tops my list for its incredible blend of adventure, nature, and divine food. It’s a destination that has something for everyone, whether you’re travelling with children or seeking something more romantic. From my experience, Costa Rica is the ultimate playground. The country’s biodiversity is incredible. My children and I spent our days walking through rainforests with guides trying to spot exotic wildlife like sloths and even howler monkeys. We stayed in Arenal and even got the opportunity to climb a volcano. My children also loved ziplining through the jungle and boat tours across rivers. My sons also loved the surfing culture when we took a detour to the beaches in the south! Costa Rica has everything and more to keep your little ones entertained. Not to mention the food! Traditional Costa Rican food is both healthy and delicious. My daughter is a little bit on the picky side in terms of food but she loved every meal that we had in Arenal!

For couples, Costa Rica transforms into an intimate escape from the concrete jungle that is places like London. You can explore remote beaches like Playa Conchal or even Manuel Antonio. Many resorts specifically cater to couples, offering private dinners, spa services, and outdoor adventures that make it easy to connect with each other and the surrounding nature. Whether you’re with your family or on a romantic trip, Costa Rica’s Pura Vida lifestyle ensures an unforgettable experience. I still find myself chanting Pura Vida whenever something amazing happens!

  1. Thailand: Beaches, Culture and Cuisine!

Thailand holds a special place in my heart. The vibrant culture, delicious food, and stunning landscapes offer countless opportunities to explore.  Whether it’s exploring ancient temples in Chiang Mai, playing on the sandy beaches of Phuket, or visiting the ethical elephant sanctuaries, Thailand has so much to offer for everyone. The country is full of opportunities for family fun, from exploring floating markets to taking long-tail boat rides through the iconic limestone cliffs of Phang Nga Bay.

For couples, Thailand offers a dreamy escape. You can spend your days lounging on secluded beaches like those in Koh Phi Phi or Koh Lanta, or embarking on a culinary adventure through Thai cooking classes. My favourite cooking lesson had to be learning how to make Thai white curry. I’ve never eaten as much food as I did in Thailand. Lets not forget the amazing traditional Thai massages that left me feeling refreshed and healed.  Thailand also offers a spiritual side with meditation and wellness retreats, making it a perfect choice for couples looking to recharge and reconnect with themselves and each other. The combination of family-friendly adventures and romantic escapes makes Thailand a versatile destination for all.

  1. Bali: Spirituality, Beaches, and Family Fun

Bali is another top destination that perfectly balances family fun and romantic getaways. Bali is known for its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality. No wonder the Aussies are always in Bali. Bali offers families a range of activities. You can explore the Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud or visit water parks like Waterbom Bali, or even take part in traditional Balinese dance and art classes. Bali’s beaches ( my family and I visited Sanur and Nusa Dua), are perfect for families, providing calm waters where children can swim and play safely. The island also offers numerous cultural experiences that are great for both kids and parents, like visiting temples and rice terraces.

For couples, Bali is a paradise of relaxation and spirituality. Romantic and  secluded villas (wink wink) surrounded by lush jungles or perched on cliffs overlooking the ocean are perfect for a couple’s retreat. The island is known for its wellness retreats, where you can indulge in spa treatments, practice yoga, or even embark on a spiritual journey together. Bali creates the perfect atmosphere for both family vacations and romantic escapes.

  1. Barbados: Caribbean Charm for Everyone

Barbados felt like home away from home when I went a few years ago. My children and I loved swimming with sea turtles, exploring Harrison’s Cave,  and visiting the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, where we saw monkeys and exotic birds. The beaches on the west coast are especially good for young children, thanks to their calm waters and soft sands. Many resorts in Barbados cater specifically to families, offering kids’ clubs and activities to keep everyone entertained.

Barbados  also provides a romantic escape with luxury resorts, private beachfront villas and stunning sunsets. The island’s atmosphere is ideal for couples seeking relaxation. Whether you’re travelling with family or just your partner, Barbados offers an idyllic Caribbean experience for all.

  1. Mexico: Culture and All-Inclusive Fun

When My daughter and I went to Mexico, I had no idea what to expect! We would soon find that it is a country brimming with rich history, vibrant culture, and beautiful coastlines, making it a top choice for family vacations and romantic getaways alike. I fell in love with Mexico for its wide range of all-inclusive resorts in places like Cancun and Riviera Maya, where my kids could enjoy water parks, kid-friendly pools and endless beach activities. Mexico also offers cultural attractions that are perfect for family exploration, like the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza where we learnt about the history of the ancient people of Mexico.

For couples, Mexico also offers luxurious escapes in romantic beach towns like Tulum or Cabo San Lucas. You can spend your days exploring charming  little towns like San Miguel de Allende or  relaxing on quiet beaches, or even savouring the country’s world-renowned cuisine. Mexico’s diversity means there’s something for every kind of traveller.

And there you have it, my five top travel destinations for family and couples alike. They all represent the perfect balance of family-friendly activities and romantic retreats where memorable experiences will be made!
